CORKSCREW
A collection the owner began by chance some 30 years ago when he bought forty
or so corkscrews at a Sotheby's auction of vintage wines.
Now there are more than 300 items, mostly from England and France, of the strangest
shape and the most varied materials, with handles like miniature sculptures, of
animals, unusual objects, human figures.
Some are over three hundred years old. It is a collection that records the history
of wine through the centuries, with corkscrews from the 18th century through to
those of the 1920s and '30s, such the most amusing 'jambes des dames' examples
from the Belle Epoque period, with levers in the form of ladies' legs with garters,
like those of Can-Can dancers. |
